字由人 (Type by Free Individuals) is a printed publication exploring four distinct Hong Kong Chinese typography crafts: golden-engraved type on wood, mini-bus type on plastic boards, stencil type on metal, and neon light type. The editorial design process encompasses content research, interviews, photography, art direction, layout design, typography design, information design, and book design. We studied the history and evolution of these typographies, observed their production procedures, and documented the craftsmanship, passing along the stories behind these unique types.
The book cover features a magnifying glass, inviting readers to closely examine the details of our type city. The wordmark for each typographic craft was designed to reflect its specific appearance, while four different types of paper were selected as chapter dividers to illustrate the texture of each craftsmanship, further enhancing the tactile experience of the book.
