gLEEful Rooftop is a rooftop series initiative by Lee Gardens Association to revitalise eight rooftops in Causeway Bay, transforming them into vibrant spaces that blend traditional childhood games with contemporary design. The project aims to spark conversations across generations and preserve Hong Kong’s tenement rooftops’ unique “work-and-play” culture. By creatively reimagining rooftops as the “fifth facade,” the project highlights their potential to foster place identity, community belonging, and cultural continuity.
Inspired by collected community responses, the rooftops were designed with a “kids fun” theme, featuring playful elements like hopscotch, Red Light Green Light, paper planes, and other nostalgic games. These colourful designs aim to rekindle joyful childhood memories while creating a sense of belonging through artistic interactions, celebrating the rich tapestry of the community’s heritage.
